Delfinario Cayo Guillermo

There is now a Dolphinarium on the island of Cayo Guillermo (the little sister of Cayo Coco). Inaugurated in 2012, it is administered by the Cuban group Palmares. It is located in the southern part of Cayo Guillermo, west of the marina, in the mangroves. You may easily see the facility from the main road.

Previously, people who wished to do the excursion to swim with dolphins had to go to the Dolphinarium in the south province of Cienfuegos. A full-day excursion as the city is located several hours by bus from Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo. That excursion also included a visit to the city of Cienfuegos and the beautiful Trinidad.

The project for a Dolphinarium is dated back back from 2010. For many years people asked the authority to offer this excursion in a nearby place. The construction of a cost of four millions of Pesos required eighteen months to construct in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Environment to determine the best location for the health and well-being of dolphins and also minimize the impact on the environment.

The entrance of the Dolphinarium gives you access to the dolphin pool by crossing a 110 meter long footbridge installed in the mangroves. There are four bottlenose dolphins, Ricky and Yoyi (caught at sea and trained in the Dolphinarium in Santiago de Cuba for three years), Wendy (from Cienfuegos) and Juanma (from Varadero). Juanma was born to parents in captivity. These mammals are very affectionate and endowed with exceptional intelligence (in second place after humans).

Please note that the Dolphinarium in Cayo Guillermo is designed only for swimming with dolphins. There is no dolphin show with stands like in Varadero or Holguin.

You can get there from the panoramic bus for 5 CUC per person or by purchasing an excursion offer at your hotel. Note that this excursion is available from 9h30 to 11h30 and from 2h30 p.m. to 4h30 p.m. Check with your representative, because this activity is not offered everyday. You are not allowed to enter the site if the dolphins are in rest.

There are three options ...

1. Visit the Dolphinarium and pools (5 CUC)
Without interaction with the dolphins, only to admire and take pictures of these beautiful animals.

2. Interaction with dolphins (15 minutes for 55 CUC)
Put on your life jacket and jump into the water with dolphins for about 15 minutes. You can dance with them, touch them, give them a kiss and be splashed by their fins when they applause, followed by a photo session ($) on the platform.

3. Swim with dolphins (30 minutes for 110 CUC)
Include the interaction with the dolphins (see description above), then you will be lifted out of the water with their noses under your feet for about ten meters. It also includes a ride clinging to the fins of dolphins.

It is possible to buy photos taken by a professional photographer for this unforgettable event. The cost is 35 CUC for your photos on a CD. You must advise the photographers before going into the water.

WARNING! Verify the content of the DVD before leaving the dolphinarium.

Dolphins are exceptional mammals, it is important to follow these instructions: Do not touch the breathing hole, eyes and genitals. The use of sunscreen lotion is not recommended for swimming with dolphins and do not wear jewelry that may hurt the animal, and of course, smoking is strictly forbidden.

Dolphins eat about seven to eight kilograms of fish per day (mackerel, hake and capelin). A male dolphin in the wild can live up to thirty years, and females up to forty years. In captivity, with proper care and feeding, dolphins can live up to 60 years.

There are several Dolphinarium in Cuba like in Varadero, Cienfuegos, Cayo Santa Maria, Holguin, Cayo Largo and Santiago de Cuba.

You can contact the Delfinario Cayo Guillermo, every day from 9h to 17h at this phone number: (53 33) 301 529.
